12. SPIRIT OF THE GAME & ETIQUETTE

1. GAME LENGTH, TIMEOUTS AND SUBS

  • Each game will consist of 20 points by one team or 25 minutes, whichever comes first.
  • Each team plays two games per week. No 2 points ahead to win in effect.
  • Each team has one 60 second timeout per game.
  • Player substitutions (subs) are only allowed after a successful basket is completed OR after a stoppage of play.
  • Subs are permitted if there is an injury. The opposing team is also allowed to substitute the same number of player(s) that are substituted due to injury.

2. MINIMUM PLAYERS

  • The minimum number of players on the court is 3. Any team that does not field 3 players is subject to a forfeit. If a team is shorthanded and cannot field their regualar roster of 3 players the following can occur:
    • If the team "borrows" a player from another team, both captains must agree prior to the start of the game that the game score will count. If this is not specifically agreed upon beforehand, the team who does not have their regular team roster will be given a loss for this game.
    • However, a team is allowed to bring in a sub who does not normally play on the team roster or in the league to sub in. In this case the score will count.
    • Playoff eligbilbilty -- for a player to be eligible to sub in and play on a team in the playoffs, the sub must have played in at least 2 games in the regular season to be eligible, if not that team looses the game in the playoffs.
  • A forfeit counts as a loss. The defaulted team will receive a spirit score of 3 and the team defaulted against will receive 5 for their spirit score.
  • Any team that forfeits more than twice in a season may be asked to leave the league.
  • Women are encouraged and welcomed to play but there isn’t a minimum number of females specified on the court or team at any time.

3. STARTING THE GAME

  • To begin a game a team will start with the ball at half court.
  • To determine which team is offense/defense - one round of rock-paper-scissors will decide who has possession of the ball first.

4. RESET LINE

  • The reset line is the half court line. This is where every offensive play begins.
  • To start play, the offensive player must first check the ball in with the defense.

5. SCORING

  • Every successful basket counts as 1 point. There are no 3 point shots.
  • At least one pass must be made by the offense before a basket is counted.
  • If the defender legally intercepts the ball and therefore become the offense, they must first take the ball back to the reset line and must check the ball in.
  • The possession changes after each basket (NOT make it, take it).

6. TURNOVERS

  • On defensive rebounds (including air balls) and steals, the ball must be passed or dribbled to the reset line.
  • One pass must be made before a basket can count. If the ball does not go beyond the reset line, before the shot is taken, the basket does not count and the ball is given back to the original offensive team.

7. OUT OF BOUNDS

  • The line marks out of bounds.
  • If the ball is knocked out of bounds or goes across the half court line it shall be awarded to the opposing team (the team that did not knock it out).
  • To initiate play, the offensive team must check the ball with the defensive team.

8. FOULS

No rough contact is permitted (ie. pushing or grabbing or tripping). A player can call a foul due to either INTENTIONAL, UNINTENTIONAL OR INCIDENTAL contact. Only the people involved in the play or within 5 yards of the play can call the foul.

All games are self officiated. If teams or players cannot agree on the validity of a foul, then the play is redone from the reset line with the offense retaining possession (as if the play did not occur).

Shooting Fouls:

  • If an offensive player fouls a defensive player during a shot and the basket goes in, the basket does NOT count.
  • If a defensive player fouls an offensive player while a shot is being taken and the basket goes in, the basket counts.
    • The shooting (or fouled) team WILL retain possession of the ball.
  • If a defensive player fouls an offensive player while a shot is being taken and the basket is missed, the shooting team WILL retain possession and play is resumed from the reset line. No free-throw shot is taken in this case.

9. VIOLATIONS

A list of violations that result in a turnover:

  • Traveling: Taking more than two steps while in control of the ball without dribbling.
    • Incorrect Pivot: A player may pivot on one foot while holding the ball. If the player lifts their pivot foot up and they have not passed the ball or started dribbling.
  • Over and Back: Once an offensive player has crossed half-court completely with the ball (two feet are over the half-court line), the ball cannot be passed back into the back-court.
  • Double Dribbling: Dribbling the ball, stopping, and then dribbling again.
  • Kicking the Ball: Players can not intentionally kick the ball with any part of their leg.

10. JUMP BALLS

Alternating possession on all jump ball situations will be in affect.

11. TIE GAMES

A tie can occur in the regular season and will count as a tie in the standings. A tie cannot occur in the playoff game - play must continue until the final point is made. All teams make the playoffs, which occur the final week of the season.

12. SPIRIT OF THE GAME & ETIQUETTE

Teamplay.ca's Basketball relies upon a spirit of sportsmanship, which places the responsibility for fair play on the players. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of the fun-first, winning second motto. Such actions as taunting of opposing players, dangerous aggression, intentional fouling, or other “win at all costs” behavior are contrary to the spirit of the game and must be avoided by all players.

If a foul is committed and not called by the opposing player, the player committing the foul should call it on themselves. If there is a dispute or confusion about the rules or a particular play on the field, it is good practice to stop play and resolve the matter.

If a novice player commits a foul out of sincere ignorance of the rules, it should be common practice to stop play and explain the foul in a friendly manner.

When awarding spirit points, give your opponent 5 points by default and subtract points based on the rating system belowt. For any team that forfeits, an automatic 3 will be awarded for the defaulted team and 5 to the team that is defaulted against.

Teams that award an opponent a spirit score less then 3 will be contacted and asked to provide an explanation. If an explanation is not provided within 24 hours of the email sent, a spirit score of 3 will be awarded instead.

A refund will not be given due to forfeits or cancelled games due to weather, for injuries, or for any player or team that is suspended or ejected from a game/season or league due to foul play or objectionable conduct.

We enforce a zero tolerance policy with this issue. teamplay.ca offers a post-game venue to celebrate and connect with your teammates after each game night.

8. SEVERE WEATHER OR POOR FIELD CONDITIONS

To ensure that the fields are not damaged, teamplay.ca follows the following criteria set by the Community Services Department to determine whether a field is "unplayable": visual ponding of water on the surface of the field, water sponging under foot when walking on field, the Game Official deems the sport field to be unsafe for play, there is lightning, or the Community Services Department determines a diamond is unplayable.

If lightning is present leave the field of play immediately and seek safe shelter. Wait 30 minutes and see if the foul weather subsides. If it does not, the game is cancelled and there is no make-up date. If the game is cancelled and at least 20 minutes of the game was played, the game will count in the standings - record the score at the time the game was called. If the weather clears up the game will continue and be played until its normal ending time. Games still start/end at the regularly scheduled time in the event of severe weather stoppage.

If the field is deemed unplayable by the City, the games will cancelled. If you are concerned that the game may be cancelled, click here for the latest field closures before your game.

If Indoor facilities are closed due to inclimate weather games are cancelled and are not rescheduled.

9. GAME POINTS/STANDINGS/FORFEITS

Each team is responsible for recording the game score. Before leaving the field of play make sure you confirm the score with your opponent. If there is a discrepancy in the final score the 2 teams must come to a consensus of what the score is prior to the start of the next game otherwise both teams will be given a tie.

Ties in the standings will be broken by; spirit average, head-to-head match ups, common opponent win/loss, if still tied a coin toss will break the tie heading into playoff week.

A forfeit counts as a loss in the standings. The team defaulted will receive 3 for spirit and the team defaulted against will receive 5 for that game.
